What services or supports can be delivered under the NDIS?

Supports and services delivered for NDIS participants should help people with disability have the same things in life as other people, like somewhere to live, a job, hobbies and the company of families and friends.

Participants choose and pay for supports and services out of an individually allocated budget based on their goals. Supports and services for participants fall into three categories: core, capital and capacity building :-

Core: A support that helps a participant complete daily living activities. Example, support workers, cleaners and gardeners

Capacity Building

Capacity building: A support that helps a participant build their independence and skills. Example, Occupational therapist, Speech Pathologist and Counselling

Capital: A support for an investment, such as wheelchair, assistive technologies, equipment and home or vehicle modifications, or funding for capital costs (e.g. to pay for Specialist Disability Accommodation).

Recovery Coaching - Assistance for participants arising from mental health conditions to live a full and contributing life

NDIS Home and Living Supports

The NDIS can assist participants to live independently. Participants and their families can discuss their home and living goals as part of their planning conversation. A participant's plan will include the supports the NDIS will fund as well as the supports the participant will need to access through the housing system.

Most participants will continue to access housing in the private market by owning or renting, or through social housing.

NDIS participants are responsible for day-to-day living costs including rent, groceries, utilities, telephone or internet costs. This is the same for general household items such as a bed, fridge or cooking utensils. There are some limited circumstances where the NDIS may make a contribution to these costs.

Therapy | NDIS

Within your plan there are three main categories of supports (the ‘purpose’ of the support) funded through the NDIS – Core supports, Capital supports and Capacity Building supports. Therapy is considered a Capacity Building support – a support that enables a participant to build their skills and independence. In the Capacity Building section of your plan, supports are further broken down by category and therapy comes under the ‘Improved Daily Living’ category which is defined by the NDIS as follows: ‘Assessment, training or therapy to help increase your skills, independence and community participation. These services can be delivered in groups or individually.

Confusingly, in the NDIS myplace portal Improved Daily Living is referred to as CB Daily Activity.
